Today’s Americans are not as intelligent compared to our ansestors, people have many different opinions on this topic. There is definitely a lot of arguments that could occur, like today’s Americans are definitely more intelligent because of all the amazing things that where accomplished, like cancer, back then cancer was basically a death sentence and most people had a very little chance of survival but these “non intelligent” Americans/people in today’s society have made patients with cancer lives more liveable and they can live a longer healthier life. On the other hand some can argue that today’s Americans are less intelligent then our ancestors because of the new things that our society Prioritizes ,like our president Donald Trump, supposedly all of these immigrants are trying to get into the United States and if they come into America they will create all this chaos and danger. When people travel near the border there is literally almost no one there but there is this Excessive amount of military for what, In many people’s eyes Donald Trump is wasting his time and money for something that isn’t even Necessary, he could be doing more world changing things. A speech written by Henry David Thoreau “Different Drummer”. He in some ways agrees with today’s Americans being less intelligent but, he also thinks that there is no purpose in thinking that way. He uses Syntax and metephor to help his readers understand his point.
Henry David Thoreau knew that thinking about today’s Americans and how smart they where really didn’t have purpose because it is the past, he says “ A living dog is better than a dead lion”, this lets us know where he stands, agreeing with what he said but no one can do anything about it. Using syntax in his speech helps the readers know what he is getting at because of the way certain things are said. And metaphor works just right with the way he is using syntax because people can’t start going crazy over something they have absolutely no control over so they should just take care of themselves and let what ever is happening happen.

He did question today’s Americans being more dumber then past Americans, but he knew that there is no point in that, letting people know that not everything is going to be the same way and because of that you shouldn’t go and kill your self.
