Chief Joseph had surrendered to the U.S. army because he had given up on fighting for so long. many people had been surprised on how chief Joseph surrendered because they went through a lot of suffering to just surrender in the end. their tribe had been bothered all through out the years because the government wanted the land for the resources, to just use it. At first the native american's didn't like the thought of this because the earth and land where very valuable for the Nez Peerce tribe, but they had been fighting with the U.S. army for so long that they just couldn't fight and longer and chief Joseph didn't want his tribe to get hurt anymore.
